I am a young adult author, proud to have been raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where the streets are paved with challenges, and yet, lots of love. At age 12, I knew I wanted to be a writer, so I started penning short stories and showed them off to friends and family. I received praise and lots of encouragement, but around this time, my academic standing was about to slip from Honor Student to truant. Consequently, my aspirations had to be put on hold. After a series of setbacks, I ended up graduating from City-As-School, an alternative high school which allowed me to focus on academics instead of superficial concerns.
After graduation, I began working at soul-crushing jobs. The creative part of me knew I had to start taking my authorial pursuits seriously. So I reflected on my first exposure to real-life working writers while attending the National Association of Black Journalists’ student workshop (an awesome program), and convinced myself that I too, could become a professional writer. One day, on a whim, I submitted an unsolicited article to New Youth Connection, an edgy, city-wide high school paper founded by Keith Hefner. My article was received with enthusiasm, and was later reprinted in an anthology associated with the program. Seeing my name in print gave me the confidence to pursue a writing career, and obtain a Bachelors Degree in Creative Writing from New York University. And now, more than a decade later, HOT GIRL, my first traditionally published novel, will finally see the light of day. I thank all who've helped me gain confidence in my work along the way, including reviewers I've only met online. Through my work, and my talks, I hope to help young adults realize their full potential before it's too late.
